Creating Useful AI Visualizations for Your Library

In our "AI Studio: Creating Words, Images, and More" class for CALL Academy, we recently did a mini-workshop on using AI to edit images for the purpose of visualizing physical improvements within (or just outside of) the library!

For the record, there are a lot of different tools that can do this but we used our PLAID PICS image gallery tool for text-driven image editing (e.g., "add study lamps to the reading room tables in this picture").

First up, my traditional example that I've used in this sort of workshop for the past several months. We took a photo of my local library and asked the AI to insert a bike rack and a bike repair station into the image. The results are pretty impressive in my opinion:

Here's another take:

One of our attendees submitted their own example of using this technique to visualize improvements to the interior of her library. In this case, she used Google Gemini to edit photos of her library to show potential improvements.

Prompt: "this wall of shelves on the back is usually our monthly display. Can you help me make it more attractive? Usually we create some signs and display books about a particular subject, for example, in March the display is about trailblazing girls and young women who changed the world."

Side-by-side comparison: the original wall of library shelves used for a monthly display, and an AI-edited version with added signage and a more attractive book display.

Prompt: "Help me redecorate my library to make it more attractive and efficient for our patrons. We are a small community college library serving mostly adults. Please suggest ideas that are not expensive as we have a limited budget and use the photos to create mockups of your suggestions."

Side-by-side comparison: a sparsely furnished community college library reading room, and an AI-generated mockup of the same room redecorated with added furniture, lighting, and decor.
